Slitaz is a great distro we need more than ever . COVID-19 has increased laptops demand world wide raising its prices and millions of poor Children in many countries are not going to school any more. The only way for them to continue stuying under COVID-19 is by virtual education, so they all need a laptop, which they can not afford to buy. Slitaz would be the perfect solution to this problem, making possible to setup cheap old netbooks and pcs with Slitaz for them. Then it deserves Linux Community attention. This is is a great opportunity for the Slitaz Team to make a really important job. I hope Slitaz Team wakes up, the forum is waiting your response.

Yesterday I've updated a computer that wasn't since 2020/06/30.
The bad display when updating the system appears just after busybox-boot (or maybe busybox, I'm don't remember which one exactly but it seems to me it was busybox-boot) has been updated.

There is an integrated tool in SliTaz ISOs to create a LiveUSB from Windows.
Change the extension .iso in .exe and then run it.
If it doesn't work, try with the .exe file, on the mirror
It should open this window

Hi..I attempted numerous orders/fixes proposed on the web, yet none of them worked.
It's an old Latitude D-620 PC, it was all the while working fine so I chose to introduce Linux Mint on it to utilize this PC. I figured out how to make wifi work around then (on 17.1). In any case, presently with this new form I can't make sense of it, haven't been working throughout the day yesterday, scratching my head, attempting many fixes, none of them appeared to work.

Kiriyama,

If you are preparing the pendrive in Windows, disable the antivirus, for example, AVG Antivirus blocks the flash drive from flashing.

The download link for SliTaz is detected as suspicious, ISO files are detected as suspicious or threats, so it will be necessary to disable the antivirus.

I tested the startup of the new version on July 25, 2020 and it worked normally. The preparation of the pendrive was with the balenaEcher-Portable.

Kiriyama,

Rolling .iso 8/1/2020 OLD HP laptop N3250 tested with Puppy, DSL, & TinyCore.

Slitaz3.0 boots but no wifi using pcmcia Belkin F5D7011 (rtl8188).

Today's iso boots up to "cmov" (????)

If, if, if Slitaz supports the Belkin F5D7011, please advise the "cmov" work-around.

Actually, I have 5 of these laptops and a shoebox full of assorted pcmcia cards.
Hoped to show the class how to make use of old laptop.

I'm going to mark this as solved, as although I cannot install, the machine definitely can run Slitaz using the above guidance.

ryanjgillies on "Live USB with persistence?"

How can I go about creating a Live USB stick with persistence. This is off the back of my attempts to install on to an HP ThinClient t5540 (http://forum.slitaz.org/topic/slitaz-50-rc3-on-hp-thinclient-t5540) where the internal HDD is too small.

So far I've only been able to create a Live USB using Rufus 3.11, no persistence, dd mode. If I try to create with persistence Slitaz fails to boot.

From inside of Slitaz, I've tried using tazusb gen-iso2usb with multiple ISOs and USB sticks but receive the following error each time: Copying needed files from CD-ROM... Failed

I then attempted a Slitaz install onto the USB stick rather than HDD, which so far I think has the best chance of success. I install Slitaz and the bootloader to USB, but receive a cannot find boot media error on boot. I presume this is because I am installing to /dev/sdc1 and when I restart with the Live USB removed (/dev/sdb1) the bootloader is pointing to a place that no longer exists (sdc becomes sdb).

Can anyone provide any advice on installing to a USB stick, perhaps the bootloader going onto the 128mb internal flash (sda) of this particular machine and referencing that specific USB stick by some sort of hardware ID, to avoid any issues if additional USB sticks are plugged in at a later point?

Or better still is there an easier way to create a live USB with persistence? Ideally I'd take an image of the stick when I'm done and copy it to work on the 10 thin clients I have.

@marcelocripe
Many thanks for your kind post: please excuse the one-week delay in getting back to you, but I hardly ever come here these days. I just drop by sometimes to see if Slitaz has got fixed as there were many issues..

It is with much regret that I had to stop using Slitaz, as there were too many seemingly unresolvable problems with it and not enough people available to help with basic questions. I finally left Slitaz and am now with antiX: it's the only useable distro that will work well on a single-core CPU (1.66GHz) Samsung netbook, like Slitaz used to be.

I really wish I could help the Slitaz community to resurrect the distro, but unfortunately I don't have the advanced coding skills required.

Kind regards
Mikey777

Hello Mikey777, how are you?

Thank you very much for returning to the post, your response reflects well a topic started by guest_account at the link: http://forum.slitaz.org/topic/slitaz-future.

Unfortunately people give up when they don't have help ...

Who are wrong, those who do not receive help or those who have knowledge and do not help?

Or better, what is the use of a new ISO for SliTaz every 7 or 15 days? Updates and corrections could be quarterly or half-yearly.

Who else loses with this is the SliTaz distribution itself and the GNU / Linux community.

"I really wish I could help the Slitaz community to resurrect the distro, but unfortunately I don't have the advanced coding skills required."

I also do not have enough knowledge to help, I am a beginner in the Linux world, apparently Mr. Ceel is alone here on the forum.

If SliTaz developers and maintainers do not pay attention to this, it will be sad to see SliTaz increase the list of discontinued DistroWatch distributions https://distrowatch.com/search.php?ostype=All&category=All&origin=All&basedon=All&notbasedon=None&desktop= All & architecture = All & package = All & rolling = All & isosize = All & netinstall = All & language = All & defaultinit = All & status = Discontinued # simple.

It is a lot of time and work thrown away in each of the distro discontinued or abandoned by its creators and developers.

"I really wish I could help the Slitaz community to resurrect the distro, but unfortunately I don't have the advanced coding skills required."

All&category=All&origin=All&basedon=All&notbasedon=None&desktop=All&architecture=All&package=All&rolling=All&isosize=All&netinstall=All&language=All&defaultinit=All&status=Discontinued#simple.

É muito tempo e trabalho jogado fora em cada uma das distro descontinuadas ou abandonadas por seus criadores e desenvolvedores.

Ceel on "Live USB with persistence?"

Hello ryanjgillies,

Copying needed files from CD-ROM... Failed

It looks like if you used the tazusb gen-liveusb command ??

To have persistence, the stick must be formated EXT2 or EXT3:
tazusb format /dev/sdX1
Then:
tazusb gen-iso2usb /path/to/your/file.iso
should create the Live.

There is a long time I didn't use tazusb and unfortunately I don't have any USB stick with me. I'll try to test it tomorrow evening or the day after.

Concerning your installation on a USB stick, cannot find boot media is a message of the computer, not of the bootloader. It seems there is no bootloader installed on your stick.
How was the stick formated? FAT? and what bootloader did you install?

I consider migrating an old laptop from Ubuntu 14.04 LTS to SliTaz.
Please help me with a few issues:
1. SliTaz is a rolling releaze. If I install the stable version and I don't update the system for a long time, like, for example, a year, will I be able to update the system with no hassle after that?
2. SliTaz offers sshd? (I think it does, but ...)
3. Can I watch non-YouTube videos in Firefox on SliTaz?
4. wi-fi and bluetooth will work on Toshiba Satellite A-80? In Ubuntu I could not get the command line to work for bluetooth, but the GUI did the job, so I'm a bit uncertain on this issue.

Filou on "Printing without CUPS or other driver using PDF-capable printer"

$

It somehow felt strange to me to have a lightweight distro of compressed ~50 MB and at the same time having the necessity to install a printer driver of more than 65MB of installation files...

When realizing that my HP Color LaserJet MFP is able to print a PDF directly, without any driver necessities, I did exactly that by sending the file via netcat to the printer.

What was lacking was the possibility to edit the main parameters: Duplex printing (e.g. double sided), Eco-Mode, number of copies...

I had a look in the Printer-Language PJL which gives so straightforward possibilities to edit exactly these parameters by appending some lines of code to the beginning of the PDF.

What I finally did was writing some lines of code calling a small YAD-interface asking the above mentioned three questions, creating the resulting PJL/PDF file and sending it to the printer via netcat.
The script is triggered by incron.d, a daemon that supervises the filesystem and can be configured to start scripts when a file is added to a directory (or edited or removed or ....).

So what do you need?

- install incron via tazpkg -gi incron
- edit /etc/incron.allow and add all users who should use the "driver"
- add a directory /var/spool/incron/
- create a file named as the user in /var/spool/incron (ex.: /var/spool/incron/tux) containing this code:
/var/spool/PDFPrinter IN_CLOSE_WRITE /usr/bin/PDFPrint.sh $# $%

- create a directory /var/spool/PDFPrinter (or as you like, but must match the scripts !)
- chgrp lp /var/spool/PDFPrinter (to have users of group "lp" have access)
- chmod g+w /var/spool/PDFPrinter (to let the users have write access)

- create a file /usr/bin/PDFPrint.sh like as in:
https://gist.github.com/F1lou/bc753e80fc07f5977c71e0f8ab3c4b2f

- open /var/spool/PDFPrinter in pcmanfm and add a favourite

As a result I can print files from every program that exports directly to PDF, eg.:
- LibreOffice
- FreeOffice
- Almost all Browsers
- evince (with the possibility to print only selected pages or resizing)

by simply exporting / "printing" to the folder /var/spool/PDFPrinter.

The resulting "overhead" is about 150kB ...
